Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, has disowned the N206 billion inserted into the ministry’s 2023 budget estimates.

Farouq, at a budget defence session with the Senate Committee on Special Duties on Monday, said her ministry was surprised that the fund, meant to implement projects for the North East Development Commission (NEDC), was inserted in the budget after a similar request in 2022 was not released.

A member of the committee, Senator Elisha Abbo, had asked Farouq about N206 billion in the budget that the ministry intended to borrow.

He said, “In 2023, you intend to borrow N206 billion for some projects. What are the projects to be implemented and are they captured in the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework?

“If they are, what are the specific project locations and activities?”

In her response, the minister said: “Yes, we made mention of the projects for 2022, part of it was for the North East Development Commission (NEDC). The money was not released and now we have seen it recurring by almost 10 folds.

“We are also going to clarify from the ministry of finance to know why this increase in spite of the fact that the previous year, the money was not even released for the projects. So, we will get the details, then send it to you.”

The committee therefore resolved to summon the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed to give explanation about the N206 billion following a motion to that effect by the chairman, Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf.

Atiku Visits Ningi, Says NASS Shouldn’t Be Tool In The Hands Of Oppressive Govt

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said for the country to move forward public institutions, especially the National Assembly should not become a tool “in the hands of oppressive governments.”

Atiku gave the charge during a solidarity visit to the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Senator Abdul Ningi, at his residence.

Ningi was recently suspended by the Senator Godswill Akpabio-led Senate for alleging that the Federal government was operating a budget different from the one approved by the National Assembly.

Speaking at Ningi residence, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election said the interest of Nigerians would be better served and envisaged development assured if premium is placed on strengthening the integrity of the institutions of government.

Atiku noted that, “the integrity of public institutions, especially such as the National Assembly, is a mirror to how the interests of the masses are preserved and protected in a democracy.”

He said further that the struggle that Senator Ningi finds himself in is a continuation of the long-drawn agitation (which Ningi had been a part of) to make sure that public institutions in nigeria don’t apply brute force to oppress and compromise the interests of the masses.

“This agitation did not start just recently. It started during the military era, and it is essential that public institutions, especially the National Assembly, do not become a tool in the hands of oppressive governments.”

“By our visitation today, we have come to show solidarity with Senator Abdul Ningi and to also pass a message to those who see public office as an instrument to oppress the people, that Senator Ningi is not alone in this struggle.

“In fact, the entire people of nigeria and friends of nigeria in the international community are behind our drive to cleanse the country of oppressive nuances of people in positions of authority,” Atiku said.

Responding, Senator Ningi thanked Atiku and his delegation for the visit and for choosing to take a stand on the side of the masses.

“The struggle that we are in for today is to make sure that whichever political party is in power and whoever is in the position of public office, the interests of the masses must remain sacrosanct and insulated from the whims of any one individual, no matter how highly placed,” he said.

Peter Obi Questions 30-Year Completion Target for Lagos-Calabar Highway

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has tackled the Federal Government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

Obi expressed his concern in a statement via his verified X handle on Monday.

According to him, there is a pressing issue of numerous uncompleted roads scattered across the country, many of which, according to him, have become hazardous death traps and security risks.

He maintained that embarking on another huge project that will not be completed in the next 20 or 30 years will only worsen the problem of abandoned, uncompleted projects that are not contributing to economic growth and overall development.

Obi suggested that given the state of the nation’s economy, prioritization and fiscal discipline should be the critical guiding principles, insisting that the project will worsen the already sagging debt burden.

The former Anambra State governor said most of those uncompleted roads have been under construction for several years and are unlikely to be completed any time soon due to poor and unplanned funding.

He said, “I have closely followed the comments and developments arising from the coastal (Lagos-Calabar) Super highway Project.

“While I’m hesitant to engage in contentious debates about its benefits, which I acknowledge, and the pricing, which I have serious concerns about, and believe should be thoroughly reviewed, I am compelled to raise essential questions about the timing and prioritization of such a monumental venture.”
