University Of Aberdeen In Scotland To Return 1897 Stolen Bronze To Nigeria

The University of Aberdeen in Scotland is set to return a Benin bronze sculpture to Nigeria, after it was taken by British soldiers in 1897.

According to sources the artefacts were taken in a reprehensible circumstances after British military expedition attacked and destroyed Benin City, looting thousands of metal and ivory sculptures and carvings, known as the Benin bronzes from the royal palace.

The university’s vice-chancellor, George Boyne expressed the desire of the university to return the artefact back to the University.

He said: “It would not have been right to have retained an item of such great cultural importance that was acquired in such reprehensible circumstances,”
